A strong immune system is vitally important to our overall health, and even more so now during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it may not prevent us from getting infected, a strong immune system can reduce the severity and length of time that the body needs to fight off an infection. Besides regular exercise, what we eat is a major component of immune system strength.

Steuben Center has a look at seven vitamins, minerals, and other items you should be eating daily to promote immune system health

  • Probiotics

These good bacteria are great for gut health and pushing bad bacteria out. Cultured dairy products like yogurt have millions of probiotics in them.

  • Protein

Protein is helpful in healing and recovery and comes from a variety of sources. Any red meat or poultry is a good source, along with fish, eggs, nuts, beans, and seeds.

  • Vitamin A

Vitamin A regulates the immune system and protects the body against new infections. It’s common in many vegetables, including sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and spinach. You can also find it in eggs and fortified cereals.

  • Vitamin C

This is a popular immune booster that increases the number of antibodies in your system. All fruits and vegetables have vitamin C, especially citrus fruits.

  • Vitamin D

Dairy products like milk are fortified with vitamin D, and this nutrient is also found in fatty fish and eggs.  You can also get vitamin D via natural sunlight.

  • Vitamin E

Vitamin E works as an antioxidant (reducing inflammation) and is plentiful in sunflower seeds, peanut butter, and fortified cereals.

  • Zinc

Zinc helps wounds heal and also is an immune system booster. It’s best to get it through food like beef and fish along with beans and tofu. Taking it in supplement form can upset the stomach unless taken with a fairly large meal.
