When it comes to having a project or repair around the house done right, the most important part is hiring the best person (or people) for the job. Fortunately in the digital age, finding someone and making sure they do quality work is a lot easier than it used to be, but there are still measures you can take to ensure that you get excellent work done at a competitive price.

Steuben Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has the details on a four-step process that will make sure you have the best tradespeople for your project.

  1. Get Names

Beyond a simple Google search where you can get names and read reviews, talk to neighbors, family, and friends in the area to see if they have any recommendations. Someone may know a great person who doesn’t have an internet presence and thus will not appear in a Google search. Nextdoor, Yelp, and local Facebook groups are also great places to do some research.

  1. Do Your Homework

Now that you have some names, it’s time to research them. Take a close look at those Google reviews for any potential red flags. Additionally, make sure to find reviews that aren’t on the business’s website, as those sites will only feature positive reviews and may not even be real.

  1. Get Some Quotes

Most businesses will come out for a free quote, while others will take off the charge for a quote or initial visit if you choose to go with their business. Try to secure a quote via email or over the phone to avoid a charge, and be sure to let them know there are other bidders and give them a deadline.

  1. Meet With the Best Two

If one person doesn’t stand out, pick the best two and meet in-person with each one. You will probably get a feeling on which one you will like to work with based on their ability to listen, be hands-on, and their enthusiasm/positivity.
